Kolkata : At least nine people on their way to West Bengal’s Digha beach on Makar Sankranti were killed Tuesday when a train collided with their motorised cart at an unmanned crossing.
The accident took place around 11.30 a.m. at East Midnapore’s Ramnagar area, about 125 km from here, when the Digha bound Shalimar Express crashed into the vehicle – a motorised three wheeled cart used by people in rural West Bengal.
The victims, including women, were on their way to Digha for a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
Three more people were seriously injured, police said, adding that four of the victims were of one family.
