The explosion occurred around 11 a.m. at an electricity pole near the gate of the IIT. One person who was standing close to the pole was critically injured and admitted to a nearby hospital.

Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: “There was no bomb explosion. It was just a blast in the capacitor of the electricity pole. People should not give importance to rumours and maintain peace and calm.”

However, some senior officials told IANS on condition of anonymity that it could have been a crude bomb explosion and the facts were still being verified.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot and a team of forensic experts was collecting evidence.

The explosion led to massive traffic hold-ups in the busy roads around the IIT.
