Shah Burhan, chief of the Panjwayee district, once the stronghold of Taliban militants, said the bomb was planted by Taliban militants to target the NATO and Afghan troops.

The militants did not issue any comment so far.

The improvised explosive device (IED) hit a civilian car Saturday evening, resulting in the killing of all the passengers, said the district chief. The casualties included a woman, child and three men, he added.

Panjwayee and Zerai districts in Kandahar, the spiritual capital of Taliban militants, were the stronghold of Taliban.

The militants were expelled from the two district as a result of a massive ground and air operation by the NATO and Afghan forces last year.

However, the Taliban are targeting the troops in the two districts by using IEDs, the tactic believed to be borrowed from militants in Iraq, from time to time.
