The Madhya Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (MPRTC) bus, carrying around 85 pilgrims, was coming to the state capital from the temple town of Puri, some 56 km from here, a senior district police official told IANS.

The incident took place around 9 a.m., the official said.

The critically injured passengers have been taken to Sriram Chandra Bhanja Medical College at Cuttack, he added.

According to police, passengers were carrying kerosene stoves along with them and kerosene from one of the stoves believed to have drained inside the bus engine accidentally. This might have triggered the fire, police said.
