Five die as chilly conditions persist in North India

New Delhi : People in most parts of north India continued to reel under piercing cold conditions with Pink City Jaipur registering a record low in five years even as five people perished in the chill in Uttar Pradesh.

Icy winds blowing from Himalayas kept the capital’s weather chilly with minimum temperature being three degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, PTI reported here.

Snowfall in northern parts of the country has resulted in icy winds blowing towards the northwest plains and this is causing dip in temperatures, MeT officials said.

Rajasthan capital Jaipur recorded a low of two degrees, the lowest since 2003 when it had a minimum of 2.2.

Churu was the coldest place in the state at minus one degree followed by Sriganganagar at 0.2 degree.

Five persons lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh due to severe cold, raising the statewide toll this season to 62. Agra remained the coldest place with a low of 1.8 degrees.

Adampur in Punjab recorded a minimum of minus three degrees as the cold wave continued unabated in the state and neighbouring Haryana.

Adampur had its lowest minimum in 35 years Wednesday. Though Amritsar registered a slight increase in minimum temperature since Wednesday, it was still below freezing point at minus 1.8 degrees.

There was no respite for Chandigarh residents with the minimum settling at 1.4.

Cold wave conditions persisted in Himachal Pradesh with capital Shimla recording a low of minus 1.2 degree.

Night temperatures in high altitude regions were also sub-zero.

While it was minus 0.8 in Sundarnagar and minus 5.5 in Kalpa, it was minus 14 degrees in Lahual-Spiti.
