Melbourne : Russian Maria Sharapova won her third Grand Slam title in five years with as 7-5, 6-3 victory over Serb Ana Ivanovic in the women’s singles title clash at the Australian Open here Saturday.
The Russian claimed the battle of 20-year-olds to add the Melbourne honours to the 2004 Wimbledon and 2006 US Open crowns. She lost the 2007 Melbourne final to Serena Williams.
With the win over fourth seed Ivanovic, Sharapova will move to world No.2 position Monday behind Justine Henin of Belgium.
The loss was the second for Ivanovic in a Grand Slam final after going down to Henin last year at Roland Garros.
