Pyongyang : The Democratic Republic of Korea on Saturday urged the US to replace the 1953 armistice agreement on the Korean peninsula with a peace accord.
Rodong Sinmun, organ of the Korean Workers’ Party, said in an article today it is imperative to reduce military tension and preserve peace.
The Korean peninsula is the only region in the world under a state of armistice, technically a state of war for over half a century, the daily reads.
Replacing the armistice with a peace agreement is pressing, because the first one has become a dead letter for the US, it added.
Pyongyang authorities consider that such a step would end with the state of military confrontation on the peninsula, and contribute to guarantee confidence between North Korea and the US.
The initiative of a peace accord was suggested by the North and South Korean governments in a joint declaration signed in October at the end of a summit between the two presidents.
