Kolkata : Seasoned cricket administrator Jagmohan Dalmiya Wednesday night confirmed he would contest the president’s post in the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) elections to be held July-end.
Dalmiya said he had to give in to the pleas of around 30 CAB members who went to his 10, Alipore Road residence in South Kolkata Wednesday evening.
“They would just not take a ‘no’ for an answer. So, I could not say ‘no’ to them. Under their pressure. I have agreed to contest the coming polls,” Dalmiya told IANS.
Asked about his panel of secretarial and vice presidential candidates, the former International Cricket Council (ICC) chief said: “Let the present CAB authorities announce the date of the election first. Then we will see.”
With incumbent president Prasun Mukherjee already indicating his willingness to recontest, the coming polls would be a replay of the one in July, 2006, when the two fought a high-voltage election.
Despite West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee openly backing Mukherjee, Dalmiya had then narrowly scraped through by five votes.
Dalmiya had a 13-year reign as CAB president before stepping down in December 2006 after his suspension from the Indian cricket board.
