Lucknow : At least 20 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh due to wall and ceiling collapses during heavy rains, officials said Thursday.
The deaths were reported from Sitapur, Bahraich, Unnao, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Barabanki districts of the state, and details of the damage caused by Wednesday’s rainfall are still being collected, officials added.
The highest toll was reported from Sitapur, where seven people were killed.
“The deaths have been reported from Chandanpara, Haniya, Kodra, Kurathia villages (of the district) where people died in incidents of wall and ceiling collapse of some houses and shops,” A.K. Singh, a Sitapur district official, told IANS.
“We have already started the relief work for the bereaved family members and those displaced following the rains,” he added.
In Bahraich, four members of a nomadic community died as they got buried under their mud-house in the Fakharpur following heavy rains, officials said.
Meanwhile, neteorological department officials have forecast heavy rains were likely to continue in the state.
“As the state is getting continuous moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, it is witnessing heavy rainfall,” Met. director L.C. Ram told IANS.
