The prestigious Delhi University has 83 colleges under its umbrella, of which 28 comes under the Delhi state government. Urdu as a subject is taught in only 2-3 colleges out of 28.

According to a report in the Urdu daily Hamara Samaj, some posts of Urdu teachers at Delhi University’s Dept. of Urdu are vacant for years. It is said that no appointment has been made at the Dept. of Urdu in the last 12 years.

TwoCircles.net talked to Dr. Syed Ali Karim, Head of the Department of Urdu at the university, to know about the reality. He confirmed that there are some vacancies including a lecturer and a reader. But he could not say how long these posts have been vacant for.

The report says that some Urdu posts are vacant since their occupiers retired. It can be guessed what would be condition of the department without required number of teachers.

The Delhi University offers several courses in Urdu. They include M.A. (2 years), Post M.A. Diploma in Translation & Mass Media (1 year), M.Phil. (18 months), Ph.D., Certificate Course in Urdu (1 year) and Post M.A. Diploma in Urdu Paleography (1 year).
