By Xinhua,
Beirut : Nine people were killed and 33 others were wounded in renewed fierce clashes in northern Lebanese city of Tripoli as fighters exchanged rocket-propelled grenades and sniper fire, local Naharnet news website reported Saturday.
Security officials said a 10-year-old boy died of injuries sustained from a bullet fire, and two women were among the dead.
The security official added that most of the wounded were caught in crossfire between fighters from the neighboring Sunni district of Bab Tabbaneh, and Alawite area of Jabal Mohsen.
Shops in the area were closed on Friday, while people fled their homes and those who stayed behind took cover underground as gunmen took the streets, the report added.
Earlier clashes in the area have killed 14 people and wounded more than 100 since June.
The Lebanese Army was deployed in force in the city of Tripoli mid-July, pledging a tough response to acts of violence between the rival groups, but has not succeeded in preventing sporadic clashes there.
