Baghdad : US’ Iraq envoy David Satterfield has said here that Washington is very interested in bringing about success to negotiations with Baghdad for a long-term agreement.
Satterfield, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s Special Advisor and Coordinator for Iraq, made the remarks during a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari at the latter’s office here Monday, according to a government statement.
He said that the US government was keen on bringing success to the negotiations with Iraq in order to reach an agreement guaranteeing the interests of both countries and help safeguard the security and stability of Iraq.
The agreement is aimed at providing legal cover for the US forces’ in Iraq beyond 2008.
Satterfield and Zebari discussed the state-of-play of the negotiations and how it was important to clinch the deal, the statement said.
They also discussed the Iraqi government’s efforts to boost human rights.
Some Iraqi political parties are opposed to the agreement because they believe it undermines the sovereignty and independence of Iraq.
