Lucknow : Global factors were responsible for the hike in prices of petroleum products in the country and not the central government, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said here Wednesday.

Singh, who is also in charge of the party’s Uttar Pradesh affairs, told reporters here that there was no alternative to the hike and this was not the result of any policy of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

The central government Wednesday morning decided to revise prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas following the soaring international prices of crude oil.

Criticising Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, Singh said the state government was plagued by administrative indiscipline and corruption.

Singh pointed out that the state’s chief secretary had to retire under pressure for he refused to follow “wrongful and corrupt” directives of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) government.

He wondered that Mayawati was expecting a Rs.850 billion package from the central government but she never attended meetings of the Planning Commission where these issues were discussed.

“She never raises anything at the right forum and rakes up controversies through the media,” Singh said.
