Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) ordered an inquiry to determine what led to the incident in the plant, located in Maharashtra’s Raigad district about 95 km from here.

A statement issued by RIL said that a fire broke out at 11.20 a.m. when routine maintenance work was on in one section of LLDPE plant No. 2 in the Nagothane petrochemical facility.

The police had earlier told IANS that as per preliminary reports, there was an explosion in the IPCL plant leading to two deaths and 17 injuries.

The seriously injured victims were taken to the Harkisondas Hospital in south Mumbai. The rest are being treated at the Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital within the IPCL complex, the police said.

RIL said that the fire was brought under control and extinguished within minutes of the “unfortunate” incident.

The company added that the rest of the Nagothane complex is functioning normally.
