New Delhi : The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has set up monitoring centre to check contents of private TV channels.
Media reports said the centre was set up here last week and it can monitor over 100 televisions channels simultaneously.
The Information Minister has been raising objections over the contents of some channels in the past. The Indian Lok Sabha (Lower House) Speaker has also pointed finger towards some of the contents of the channels describing them as “irresponsible journalism.”
The reports quoting sources in the Ministry said the main objective of the Centre will be to keep track of programmes that violate the Programmes and Advertising Codes under Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act 1995.
The preparations for setting up the centre began six months ago and it is a web-based system which can record content and retrieve recorded footage.
However, the National Broadcasters Association, a recently formed body by private TV channels has criticised the government over the Code prescribed under the proposed Broadcasting Bill by describing it an effort by the government to control free media.
The Association has given its proposals on content regulation to the Ministry.
