Satiric poet Sagar Khayami passes away

Mumbai: Famous Urdu satiric poet Sagar Khayami passed away yesterday at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 70. He was suffering from lung cancer. He is survived by his wife and three sons. His body has been flown to Lucknow for burial.

Born as Syed Rasheedul Hasan, he is known by his title Sagar Khayami across the globe. He was born to a learned family in Lucknow on 7th June 1938. His grand-father Fakhir Lukhnawi was a renowned literary person in the city. He held a high position in Lucknow school of Urdu literature. His father Syed Aulad Hussain was also a learned personality and renowned poet. His brothers Mehdi Nazmi and Nazir Khayami are known figures in the world of Urdu literature.

Coming from that family background when Sagar Khayami stepped into the world of Urdu poetry he cut his own niche in the Urdu world.

He was ill for a long time and staying at his sons’ home in Mumbai for treatment. His sons are attached with electronic media.

Three collections of his poetry have been published. They are “Under Craze”, “Qahqahon ki baraat” and “Pase Raushni.” “Kulliyate Sagar,” his collection of poetry was in the last stages of preparation.

Several awards were bestowed on him. Among them was Ghalib Award which he was honoured with in 1997.

He began his working life as Lab Assistant at Jawahar Lal Nehru University. He was a great fan of cricket which is reflected in his poetry also.
