Agartala : Two Congress legislators were suspended after a ruckus in the Tripura assembly over alleged irregularities in the higher secondary examination results.
Two opposition Congress lawmakers, Sudip Roy Barman and Biswabandhu Sen, were also injured during the melee, which lasted for about two hours disrupting the scheduled proceedings.
With the house witnessing uproarious scenes, Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath adjourned it three times before he suspended Barman and Gopal Roy for the day.
The ruckus started when opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath raised the issue immediately after question hour and demanded a judicial inquiry, dissolution of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) and action against the officials.
When the TBSE announced the results of higher secondary examinations June 10, opposition parties organised an agitation across the northeastern state protesting against what they termed as gross anomalies in the results.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and School Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty told the house that the state government would take steps to prevent recurrence of such mistakes.
The government’s assurance did not satisfy the opposition members and the melee continued till the members of the Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) walked out of the house for the day.
Debnath said: “Such unparliamentary behaviour is unprecedented in the history of parliamentary democracy in India.”
However, Nath later told reporters: “The speaker has violated rules of procedure of the house and most undemocratically suspended the opposition members from the house.”
