Tianjin (China) : China Tuesday launched an anti-terrorist exercise at the venue of Olympics Games in Tianjin to test the response of security forces to a possible chemical attack during the games.
The exercise, the first in a series of drills dubbed “Binhai 6”, was based on the scenario of a terrorist chemical attack in an Olympic football match venue.
Tianjin, located 120 km away from Beijing, is the co-host city of the Olympic games and will hold all football matches. The Olympics games are scheduled from Aug 8-24.
During Tuesday’s drill, a car in the parking lot of the stadium suddenly exploded and caught fire, giving off heavy yellow smoke and a pungent smell. Many people fainted.
The headquarters immediately dispatched rescuers, including firemen, traffic police, special police, army troops and personnel from water, electricity and gas supply departments to the site in order to assess thier response to the incident.
The public was informed about the drill beforehand in a bid to avoid panic, according to an official of the headquarters.
The two-day exercise will also include missions to deal with a bomb attack and spreading rumours of attacks.
