Sania battled pain as she pulled a laborious three-set win over Colombian Calalina Castano to move into the second round Tuesday.

“I can’t say that my wrist is perfect. Medically it’s fine now but I still have pain. That’s something the doctors and even some of the players who have had wrist surgery said, that the pain stays,” Sania said.

“But my recovery was great. Everyone is so surprised to see me here because it’s been 10 weeks since surgery, and I’m already playing in a Slam,’ she added.

The 32nd ranked Indian feels that she was playing best tennis of her life when the injury halted her run but is happy to be back on the circuit.

“I was probably playing the best tennis of my life when I had to suddenly stop after Indian Wells.

“But I wanted to compete again, and I’m just happy to be back, and I’m healthy and I’m feeling like I can compete again,” she said.

Sania made early exits on her comeback tournaments at Birmingham and the Netherlands two weeks ago but feels playing at a Grand Slam is a different ball game.

“To be honest, I’m probably playing 100 times better than I was playing in Birmingham. In a Slam, the situation is very different and you have nerves. I was not able to hit the ball before because it was hurting me, but the pain is going away because the wrist is adapting,” Sania said.
