Islamabad : Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has accepted the mercy plea of an Indian spy, who had been held in Pakistani jail for 35 years on death row on spying charges and issued his release orders.
Minister for Human Rights, Ansar Burney told reporters that he had personally met with President Musharraf and requested him to accept the mercy petition.
He said that Singh had “suffered more than enough” for his alleged crime.
He added that the release orders of Singh has been issued and he will be released on Monday and handed over to the Indian authorities at Wagha border.
Kashmir Singh was arrested in adjacent Rawalpindi city in 1973 with another person while trying to smuggle goods from Pakistan to India.
The other man was sentenced to 10 years in jail and has been sent back to India, but a Pakistani military court sentenced Singh to death.
His family in 2005 had filed a mercy petition and requested the President to release him but their petition was turned down.
