Chittagong : South African cricketers Niel McKenzie (226) and skipper Graeme Smith (232) broke the 51-year-old world record for the opening stand – held by India’s Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy – on the second day of the first Test against Bangladesh here Saturday.
McKenzie and Smith added 415 runs and surpassed the 413-run feat set by the Indian duo in 1956 against New Zealand in Madras (now Chennai).
South Africa declared their first innings at 583 for seven and Bangladesh were struggling at 60 for three at the end of the second day’s play.
The next highest opening partnership is of 410, also by India’s Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid, set against Pakistan in Lahore in 2006.
