Thiruvananthapuram : Nearly 1,300 new vehicles join the crowded roads of Kerala every day, the state’s latest economic review released Tuesday night points out.
Vehicle density in Kerala is 10,358 vehicles per sq km or 12,641 per 100,000 people. That is many times the national average, and higher than other largely urbanised states such as Goa.
While the density of vehicles leads to traffic problems, the state motor vehicle department is a major revenue-earner, the review points out.
Every day 1,276 new vehicles including 870 two-wheelers are registered.
At the end of fiscal 2006-07, Kerala had over four million vehicles, up from 3.5 million a year before.
Two wheelers lead the pack with 2,418,092, followed by 567,294 cars, 368,706 auto rickshaws, 138,916 buses and 127,873 taxis.
The commercial capital of Ernakulam leads the state with 669,509 vehicles followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 556,109.
The hill district of Wayanad has 48,331 vehicles while Idukki has 62,270.
