Kohima : The battle for political supremacy in Nagaland is poised for a close finish with no party likely to get a clear majority, according to latest trends and results declared so far for the 60-member legislature.
The Congress party won three seats and was leading in 16 others, followed by the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) that won one seat and was leading in 13 others when reports last came in.
An independent won a seat and other independent candidates are leading in three more, while two candidates each from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are leading.
The counting was slow, with trends coming in a trickle. Votes for 57 seats are being counted. There was repelling going on at some polling stations covering three constituencies Saturday.
“Votes of the three constituencies where re-polling is on would be taken up for counting later in the day when the polling ends at 4 p.m.,” an election official said.
An estimated 85 percent of the total 1.3 million voters exercised their franchise in Wednesday’s vote.
The fight for political supremacy would be between the Congress and the NPF. In the last assembly, the NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) government was supported by the BJP.
