Dakar : Heads of states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will convene for the 11th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference on Thursday to discuss issues of importance to the Muslim nations and boosting solidarity between them.
Kuwait will be represented at the meeting by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah.
His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah had tasked the foreign minister with heading the Gulf state’s delegation to the summit yesterday.
The leaders are set to discuss the amendment of the OIC Charter, the right to self-determination, the majority vote mechanism, as well as the phenomena of Islamophobia and the report prepared by the OIC Islamophobia Observatory in this issue.
They will also be looking into developments in Gaza Strip and the situations in Lebanon, Iraq, and the Iranian nuclear file, alongside political matters and efforts to counter terrorism and extremism.
Muslim heads of states had begun arriving in Dakar yesterday. Among those to attend are Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, UAE Vice President Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal.
A peace agreement is expected to be signed between Chad and Sudan on the sidelines of the summit.
The summit is also expected to witness the actual launch of the Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development. The fund was established by the Islamic Development Bank in May 2007 with an aspired capital of USD 10 billion. Saudi Arabia has contributed USD one billion and Kuwait USD 300 million.
