Man held for running into London’s Heathrow runway

London : Armed police arrested a man who sparked a security alert by running into the path of an aircraft on a runway at London’s main Heathrow airport Thursday.

First reports said the man scaled the perimeter fence and ran across one of the two runways at the airport, a major European hub.

Armed police were on the scene immediately following a spate of protests recently by environmentalist groups opposed to the planned extension of Heathrow.

But the background to Thursday’s incident was not immediately known.
