New Delhi : “Its no big deal”, “get over it” and “lets look forward” are what members of the fashion fraternity are saying about the unfortunate wardrobe malfunction at designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s collection during the ongoing fashion week here.
There was a flutter when Belgian model Debbie’s dark blue dress, which had a deep cowl neck, suddenly slipped off from her left shoulder while she was walking the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) Friday evening.
“It is very normal and can happen to you or me in real life as well. What we would have done in the same situation is what the model also did – she pulled up the sleeve and walked back confidently,” model Anchal Oberoi told IANS.
“It is wrong to conclude that she did it for publicity because no one wants to be in the news for the wrong reasons. Moreover, we are all the time on TV or shot when we walk the ramp,” she added.
“Yes it happened and happens internationally. It is now a by gone. Lets look forward!” said Pradeep Hirani, owner of fashion store chain Kimaya.
Designers and merchandisers also rebuffed reports that the mishap occurred because Singh was not present at his show to ensure everything went off smoothly.
“The unfortunate incident has been blown out of proportion. We must not blame Rajesh. He is a serious designer who has showcased at the globally renowned Paris Fashion Week. At least give him this much respect!” designer Rahul Khanna of label Cue told IANS.
Sunil Sethi, CEO of Alliance Merchandising Company, said these mishaps happen internationally and one must ignore such accidents and move on.
“Such wardrobe malfunctions happen internationally. May be we are so fashion starved that we are creating a hype out of it. For me it is not a big thing.
“If this event is for the business of fashion, then one must concentrate on that and not give heed to such trivial things,” Sethi said.
“It was not Rajesh’s (fault) but event organiser Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) for backstage mismanagement,” he added.
Designer Abhishek Gupta of label Fightercock said that the model might have been too thin to carry off the dress.
“These clothes must have been made to fit Paris models. May be the model who was flaunting the dress was too thin.
“This is not a malfunction but a human error. If a zipper would have broken that could be termed as a malfunction not this,” Gupta said.
During Varun Bahl’s show the same day, model Shamita’s shoe slipped as she began walking. But she simply took off her other shoe and walked with the pair in her hand.
The 2006 Lakme India Fashion Week in Mumbai too saw some wardrobe malfunctions – media euphemism for dress baring at the wrong places. While model Carol Gracias’ halter-top slipped off, Gauhar Khan became a victim of splitting zippers.
