The attack was concentrated in Al Jazair neighborhood and left one dead, nine wounded and several houses destroyed, according to a preliminary balance of the damages the Iraqi police reported this Saturday.

In a related case, an Iraqi translator died and six people were injured, among them two soldiers from the US occupation forces, during an attack on a military post on the border with Syria, reported the US Army higher Command.

The incident took place at the border post of Rabie when a man wearing an explosive belt detonated the device inside the offices.

Meanhhile in Baghdad there was a blast last night that wounded eight cleaners and damaged the area of Wizaq Square, at the center of the city, according to police sources.

In another incident a policeman died and eight others were wounded in a confrontation with the resistance in the last few hours of Friday.

Attacks have stepped up in recent weeks in Iraq, in contrast with announcements of the government and the occupation troops regarding reduction of violence.

At least 12 US soldiers have died in several actions perpetrated by rebels, raising the death toll of soldiers since the beginning of the invasion and after the occupation on March 2003 to 3,987. nm/abo/ycv/mf
