Murder accused, constable shot at

Ghaziabad : Assailants in a car shot at and seriously injured a murder accused and one of the policemen escorting him while they were returning from a court hearing here Tuesday.

The injured constable and the criminal were admitted to a hospital. The constable is stated to be in a critical condition. The murder accused is also in a serious state.

According to Superintendent of Police City Vijay Bhushan, three constables of Haryana Police had taken under trial Satendra, a resident of Loni, before a court in Ghaziabad for a 2002 murder. After attending the court, the constables and Satendra were going to a bus stand in a three-wheeler to return to Bhondsi jail in Haryana, where the criminal is lodged.

Four assailants in a black Alto car moved parallel to the three-wheeler and opened fire from their guns. A bullet passed through the chest of constable Om Prakash and a bullet hit Satendra in his abdomen. The other constables, Mani Ram and Bhim Singh, were unhurt.

The bullet that hit the constable must have been fired from a rifle, while the bullet which hit Satendra was from a small weapon, Bhushan said.

A case has been registered under the Sihani Gate police station. The assailants are absconding, the official said.

Satendra is said to be a notorious criminal of Haryana with over a dozen criminal cases against him in different police stations of Rohtak, Jhajjar, Gurgaon, Sonipat and Faridabad.
