Islamabad : The US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte called on President Pervez Musharraf at the Aiwan-e-Sadr here Tuesday.
The President said that it is a historic day for Pakistan and with the oath taking of a newly elected Prime Minister the process of transition to full democracy is underway.
He said moderate parties emerged victorious in the elections and the new Prime minister and his government would enjoy his full support.
The President hoped that the new government would focus on effectively addressing the economic and political challenges and sustain the economic growth achieved in the past years.
The President underlined that Pakistan would continue to pursue a comprehensive strategy to counter terrorism and emphasized the importance of a stable, broad based and multifaceted relationship between the two countries.
John Negroponte assured the President of the continued commitment of his country to Pakistan ‘s endeavours for its socio-economic development. He underscored the importance of Pakistan in fighting terrorism and extremism.
In this regard he mentioned the Reconstruction Opportunity Zones legislation which had been introduced in the Senate and U.S. support for the FATA Development plan.
