RIA Novosti news agency said the fire broke out on Wednesday in the town of Poshekhon in the Yaroslavl region, about 250 kilometres northeast of Moscow.

“The causes of the fire are unknown… Five died, and more than ten were injured. There is a one-year-old and seven-year-old amongst the dead,” the agency said, quoting a source at the local law enforcement agency.

Gas explosions have become commonplace in Russia’s Soviet-era apartment buildings. More than a dozen people have been killed since January of this year in suspected gas explosions across the country.
