Justice Kailash Gambhir’s direction came on a petition by the Green Park Extension Residents Welfare Association that had objected to the construction of a temporary office of the Election Commission in a park in the C block of the area.

The MCD was fined Rs.14,000 while the DJB was asked to pay Rs.11,000 to the association and the amount will be used for restoration of the park.

The court observed that uprooting trees, removal of swings and dismantling of a badminton court by the two statuary bodies clearly exemplified that they had scant regard for the rule of law.

The two agencies had given a portion of the park to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for three years on temporary basis and the Election Commission also had set up its temporary office there.

The court ordered the civic agencies to demolish the unauthorized structure within a week.
