New Delhi: The unknown group which claimed responsibility for the October 30 serial blasts in Assam had used an abbreviation for its name in the SMS but the police immediately contacted the local TV channel which aired the news to tell what the abbreviation stands for.
The group sent the SMS to a local television channel NewsLive and claimed the responsibility for the blasts in which about 90 people have been killed so far. The full text of the message was: “We ISF-IM take the responsibility of yesterday’s blast. We warn all of Assam and India of situations like this in future. We thank all our holy members and partners. Ameen.”
The channel received the SMS at 4:30 pm on October 31 and aired the news at 5 pm mentioning an “unknown group.” The police immediately contacted the channel to say that the police had information about such a group active in the state.
“The SMS mentioned only ISF-IM, the police told us it stood for Islamic Security Force-Indian Mujahideen,” The Indian Express quoted Syed Zarir Hussain, managing editor of NewsLive, as saying.
The SMS was sent from a Reliance connection with the number 9864693690. Soon after the message the mobile phone was switched off. The police have traced the mobile to Moirabari in Central Assam’s Nagaon district registered in the name of one Nazir Ahmed.
The man was detained and interrogated. Guwahati-based journalist Diganta Sharma said the man has denied he sent the SMS. He said his mobile might have been hacked.
