London : The Stop the War Coalition in Britain (STWC) was holding a forum on Monday night to discuss the likely impact of the US presidential elections and the economic crisis on Washington’s militaristic foreign policy.
The extensive anti-war network, which was founded in response to the US launching its so-called war on terror in 2001, said it was wary about both presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama.
“This year’s election in the US is the most anticipated in decades. A surprise McCain victory would have truly frightening foreign policy implications,” it warned.
“An Obama victory would be in large part due to anti war sentiment in the US and if he wins peace loving people round the world will at least heave a sigh of relief. But he sounds positively hawkish on Afghanistan,” it added.
The discussions on the eve of the US elections is being led by the veteran SWTC president, Tony Benn, who was a former cabinet minister and one of Britain’s longest-serving MPs.
