EU to send observers for Bangladesh elections

Dhaka : The European Union (EU) will send an observation mission for the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh scheduled Dec 18, private UNB news agency reported Tuesday.

Stefan Frowein, head of the delegation, said in a release that some 150 EU observers will be in place on election day.

He said a core team of 10 experts has already been deployed Nov 7 to coordinate the assessment of the entire election process.

They will be joined by a team of 46 observers to be deployed in two stages to assess the nomination process, the campaign period and pre-election preparations across the country.

A second team of 88 experts will be deployed mid-December to observe voting, counting and the tabulation of results. It is planned that the EU team will remain in the country for up to three weeks after the elections to observe the post-election period.
