“At around 1 p.m. the rumours originated that once again firing has started at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and at the Reserve Bank of India building, which is just 800 metres away from CST,” a senior police official said.

“The rumours spread panic and people were running everywhere. The trains were stopped and the people were asked to return. However, the police started the search operation and soon found out that there was no fresh firing at CST,” the official added.

Railway Police Commissioner A.K. Sharma said there was no firing and rumours were baseless.

The CST is a busy railway station that was targeted by the terrorists when they struck at 10 places Wednesday night.

As security forces continued to battle terrorists for the third day in south Mumbai, policemen were moving around in vehicles announcing through loudspeakers: “Please don’t panic and don’t rely on rumours.”

Maharashtra Chief Secretary Johny Joseph also appealed to people not to panic and not believe the rumours.
