In a statement to KUNA, head of the Kuwaiti delegation to the meeting, National Assembly Secretary General Allam Al-Kandari said that Arab parliaments saw that mechanisms to develop the general secretariat work, which have not been developed since 1974, was a must due to constant changes in parliamentarian frame of work.

Al-Kandari said the importance that lied behind the need to develop the secretariat came from its significance of being the body tasked with preparing and holding parliamentarian events, which enabled it to accumulate experience on parliamentarian work.

The draft project to develop the secretariat, presented by the United Arab Emirates parliamentary division, aim to keep pace with contemporary developments in parliamentary work of many of regional and international secretariats, and would give the AIUP secretariat a more technical and functional role than the traditional and administrative framework which is currently practiced.

It also aims at enhancing communication with Arab civil society organizations and peoples.

The Kuwaiti delegation will participate tomorrow in meetings of the Executive Committee of AIPU, which will be chaired by Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.

The committee is expected to discuss mechanism and activities for the next stage and the appointment of an assistant secretary-general for the union, as well as the establishment of an appropriate legal status among other issues.
