The pair tangled in what became an animated face-to-face exchange shortly before a rain break late on the third day, raising fears that the acrimony which engulfed the ugly Sydney Test last January may be about to spill over again.

“It’s a Test match involving Australia isn’t it. There’s always a bit of chat,” Broad was quoted as saying in The Australian Tuesday.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting had to intervene and had a talk with Zaheer. But Broad and umpires Rudi Koertzen and Asad Rauf found nothing untoward with the behaviour of the players.

“Nothing was reported to me,” Broad said.
