By NNN-BSS,

Dhaka, Bangladesh : The overall flood situation in the country, affecting 13 districts in the north and the central region, has remained ‘alarming,’ the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre(FFWC) said on Sunday, warning that it may deteriorate further by next 2-3 days as the three major river systems have continued rising together.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna, the Ganges-Padma and the upper Meghna, which carries the flows of the flooded rivers in Sylhet region near Bhairab Bazar are rising simultaneously, contributing to the worsening of the situation.

But the situation has yet to become as frightening as that of 1987- 88 when the major river systems went in spate together, causing one of the worst flooding after 1954 deluge, Saiful Hossain, Executive Engineer of the FFWC told BSS.

He said the situation may become clear after three or four days when the pressure on the Ganges relieves with Bihar flooding wanes.

Saiful said quoting Indian reports from Farakka, the Ganges was on the rise but slowed down today. It may continue the trend for the next 2-3 days.

But the Indian reports on the Brahmaputra said it was on the rise in the

upstream, carrying the extra flows of water from some flooded portions in Assam, he said.

Saiful said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna now poses more menace as it was rising at a faster pace, a trend which may continue for the next 2- 3 days.

The FFWC report said the monsoon is likely to remain active over north-eastern Bangladesh and adjoining Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal states in India. But the monsoon has become weak over north western Bangladesh adjoining West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

It said more low lying areas are likely to be inundated by the next 48-72 hours in the districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur, Sirajganj, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Faridpur, Shariatpur, Dhaka’s Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas and Chapainawabganj’s Sadar and Shibganj upazilas.

The flood situation in the districts of Sylhet and Sunamganj is likely to deteriorate further as the region is experiencing heavy rainfall as well as across the border. More rainfall is forecast over the region.
