Bolstering the demand from other parties and organizations, the Congress party on September 3 pressed the government to clamp a blanket ban on RSS, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari termed antinational the activities of these Hindutva extremist organizations. They are posing a serious threat to the security and integrity of the country, he further said.

Following the killing of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, violence broke out in the Kandhamal district in Orissa and so far about 27 people, mostly from the Christian community, have been killed, besides dozens of churches being destroyed. According to media reports, the activists of VHP, Bajrang Dal, Ram Sena and RSS have been involved in the violence targeting the Christians there.

Union Minister and Lokjan Shakti Party Chief Ram Vilas Paswan has also demanded ban on Sangh Parivar organizations. Paswan has demanded constitution of an independent commission to look into the activities of SIMI and all organizations of the Sangh Parivar and ban the organization found involved in antinational activities.

He said recovery of huge quantity of explosives from Sangh activists and violent attack on Christians in Orissa despite knowing that Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati was killed by Maoists, cannot be described as pro-national activities.

To press their demand for ban on Sangh Parivar, the party held a dharna at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Several prominent social activists and Muslim leaders besides Christian leaders have also demanded ban on Sangh Parivar.

In this regard a delegation comprising Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind leader and MP Maulana Mahmood Madani, filmmaker and human rights activist Mahesh Bhatt, Christian leader John Dayal and Arch Bishop of Orissa met President of India Pratibha Patil on September 1 and apprised her of the ground situation in Orissa. They urged the government to clamp a ban on the Sangh Parivar organizations which have been involved in violence in Orissa.
