Two months back when the inmates resisted their transfer to other jails even court had not given any such order, they were allegedly brutally beaten that the court had to take notice of it.

Some of the victims in this case were presented before the court on September 6, says a report in the Urdu daily The Inquilab. Replying to the questions asked by the judge, they recounted their brutal experiences before the court.

Dr. Farogh Ansari, Salman Farsi, Shamshul Huda, Afzal Khan Shabbir Masihullah, all accused in the Malegaon bomb blasts, and the accused of the Bombay blasts Faisal Ataurrahman Shaikh and Ihtesham Siddique told the court how brutally the Aurthur Road jail authorities treated them.

Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind approached the court on the matter of human rights violation by the jail authorities, the court considered their plea and initiated court hearing in this issue, says the report.

Dr. Farogh Ansari told the judge that the day he entered the Aurthur Road jail, the authorities started harassing him in various ways, either through the denial of food and beddings or beating him badly.

He had written to the Karodkar Commission to allow the Muslims prisoners to eat meat. Consequently he was threatened of dire consequences. He said he was beaten on June 28, 2008. He was seriously injured.

Ihtisham Siddique said that he was targeted as he had asked for the jail manuals so that he could be aware of his rights.

And then on June 28, he was also beaten so much that his legs and hands were broken.

After hearing the painful and brutal experiences of the prisoners, the judge gave a warning to the authorities of the Kolhapur jail because of their failure to present the prisoners of the jail before the court. The court will initiate action against the jail authorities as per the contempt of court, if they don’t present the prisoners before the court today.
