Thirty-year-old Saroj Kumar Behera sustained more than 90 percent burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Behera, a resident of Cuttack, about 26 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, was arrested on May 5, 2007 on the charge of abusing a girl.

Although he was released on bail, the trial of the case was scheduled to begin Thursday, inspector in charge of the Lalbag police station K. Rajendra Swain told IANS.

Before the beginning of the trial, Behera poured kerosene on himself and struck a match, setting himself on fire. He then ran into the court of the city’s first class judicial magistrate, Swain said.

The man said he wanted to prove he is innocent and has been framed.
