Bihar professor’s murder: Death for one, life for three

Patna : A Bihar court Friday sentenced one personto death and three to life imprisonment and another to two years in jail for the murder of Patna University professor Papiya Ghosh and her domestic help in 2006.

Additional Sessions Judge Om Prakash awarded the death sentence to Shankar Sah and life imprisonment to Ashish Kumar, Manohar Kumar and Anil Oraon. Ramchandra Mahto, a lawyer, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

All the five were convicted by the court Thursday.

Ghosh, 53, and her 70-year-old domestic help Malti Devi were found stabbed to death at her home in the city’s upmarket Patliputra Colony Dec 2, 2006.

According to police sources, while five men were arrested, two men – Sanyog Rai and Mustakim – are absconding. The court has directed the police to issue non-bailable warrants against them.

The police have recovered the professor’s Maruti car, a computer, an air-conditioner, a colour TV and a few valuables that were stolen from her house.
