Mumbai : The Aurangabad-Nashik highway was closed Friday evening for traffic after heavy rains lashed the pilgrimage city of Nashik and nearby areas, an official said.
In the past 24 hours, Nashik and adjoining areas have faced the wrath of three rampaging rivers – Godavari, Darma and Karva, control room officer S.R. Nagpure told IANS.
Certain low-lying areas of the city with a 1.1 million population were flooded with up to 6-7 feet water though there have been no reports so far of casualties.
“The affected areas are located on the banks of the rivers which flow through the city. There was two-four feet water above the two main bridges in the city, Ram Setu Bridge and Gadge Maharaj Bridge,” he said.
As a precaution, the district authorities released huge quantities of waters from three dams: Darna (20,500 cusecs), Gangapur (42,000 cusecs) and Kadva (5,500 cusecs).
Some of this water entered the low-lying areas of the city, and the local population suffered minor losses, Nagpure said.
While emergency rescue teams were in operation all over the city, he added that there was an unconfirmed report of a man being washed away in the floodwaters.
