New Delhi : Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, one of the most highly decorated officers of Delhi Police, who succumbed to his injuries late Friday after a shootout with terrorists here, will be cremated with full police honours Saturday afternoon.
“Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma will be cremated with full police honours at 4 p.m. at Nigambodh Ghat,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.
Several political leaders and a large number of Delhi Police personnel, including his team members, are expected to attend the cremation.
On Saturday morning, his residence in Dwarka, southwest Delhi, was swarming with people awaiting his body to pay their last respects. His son Divyanshu, who was hospitalised with dengue, has also returned home. Sharma had reached Friday’s shootout site at Jamia Nagar in south Delhi after visiting his son in hospital.
Apart from well-wishers, his Sector-4 house also drew many curious onlookers.
Sharma was hit thrice in the shootout with the suspected terrorists in the Jamia Nagar area, with one bullet piercing his stomach. The 44-year-old died at the Holy Family Hospital at 7 p.m.
He joined Delhi Police as a sub-inspector in 1989 and soon proved himself to be a cop with a nose to the ground. Sharma was given an out-of-turn promotion and made inspector in 1995.
