“We are not sure if he died due to the injuries suffered during the clash or (because of) tuberculosis,” said S.R. Hossain, deputy inspector general of police (prison).

Jahangir was arrested about 19 months ago in a robbery case. He suffered from tuberculosis and was admitted to the hospital twice.

He was again hospitalised following the clash with prison guards.

Another prisoner, Mohammad Azharuddin, had died Wednesday at the hospital, succumbing to head injuries he suffered in the clash with prison guards.

According to prison sources, about 50 prisoners, including Jahangir and Azharuddin, attacked the guards with blades and bricks Tuesday afternoon while the police were transferring a mafia don to Dum Dum Central Jail on the city’s outskirts. The guards hit back with batons.

In the clash, 20 guards and 30 inmates were injured. Gudda himself had slashed his stomach and hand with blade to prevent his transfer. The don’s transfer has been postponed until his discharge from the hospital.
