Hanoi : Landslides and flooding caused by Typhoon Hagupit has claimed 26 lives in Vietnam, the Vietnam News reported on Saturday, citing figures from the National Committee for Flood and Storm Control.
A landslide in northern province of Son La killed 13 people and left one missing. The storm killed ten people in northern Bac Giang province, and another three in northern Lang Son province.
The rescue workers have been trying to evacuate residents in landslide areas but it met difficulties with continuous flooding.
The storm has damaged more than 500 houses, 500 hectares of rice and other crops in Son La. A number of northern provinces have reported heavy damage, and some parts have been saturated with heavy rains and isolated by floods, the report said.
According to the experts from the Vietnamese National Center for Meteorological Forecasting, the country should prepare for more heavy rains and a drop in temperature in the north over the next few days. The south would also experience rainfall.
