Chandigarh : Rainfall accompanied by strong thunderstorms lashed Chandigarh and the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana Monday evening.
The thunderstorms and high velocity winds have become a cause of worry for farmers in the region as the wheat crop is almost ripe.
“Thunderstorms at this stage could certainly cause extensive damage to the wheat crop. The grain may also lose its usual lustre,” said a met department official.
He however said it was “quite normal” to have rains during this time of the year. “We have predicted similar conditions to prevail in the region for the next three-four days.”
The heavy downpour in the morning and again in the evening paralysed normal life in Chandigarh.
Agriculture department officials said that they would assess the damage to the standing wheat crop, which is ready for harvest.
