Athens : A 19-year-old student, upset at how his schoolmates treated him, opened fire in a vocational college in Athens Friday, injuring a fellow student and two passers-by before committing suicide, reports said.
The gunman, an ethnic Greek from the Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia, shot an 18-year-old student at the entrance of a vocational college in the western Athens suburb of Rendi, and then shot the two passers-by who tried to stop him.
He then turned the gun on himself and died shortly after being admitted in critical condition in hospital.
The student had entered the college with two guns a quarter of an hour after lessons had started, and police said they discovered a sack of other weapons nearby.
Reports said the gunman had left a note saying he could not handle the humiliation by fellow students anymore.
“The bell for lessons rang and he suddenly began opening fire,” said one witness.
Officials said the student at the college was seriously injured in the chest and two other passers-by were shot in the legs. All three have been hospitalised.
Last month a 17-year-old boy in Germany shot dead 15 people at his former school before killing himself.
Greece has been plagued by daily bombings and arson attacks on banks and multinational businesses since the police shooting of a teenager in December, which sparked the worst riots the country has seen in decades.
Although there have been cases of stabbings at educational institutions, this is the first reported shooting.
