“I wish that fantasy came true,” Gil said, referring to his dream to hold an exhibition in Cuba. He was speaking at the inauguration of his exhibition “Black Line” in this Venezuelan capital.

Gil is the second high-profile artist to express his desire to showcase his talents in Cuba after Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes who said he wants to hold a concert there.

Juanes has received huge criticism from his country and the US. But he defended his decision by saying his “concert of peace” would be a message of change for the people of his country as well as for the region.

Gil, who is known for his works in the area of integration of plastic arts and architecture, said travelling to Cuba would give him “the chance to learn from that Latin race and magic that exists there and strengthens art so much”.

Wifredo Lam (1902-1982), was a Cuban artist who sought to portray and revive the enduring Afro-Cuban spirit and culture. Though he was predominantly a painter, he also worked with sculpture, ceramics and printmaking.
