Marad 2002: Five RSS activists get 3-year rigorous imprisonment

Kochi: Five RSS activists convicted in the Marad Clashes of 2002 have been sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of three years and fine of Rs 18,000. The convicts are sentenced in the case of setting fire to the house of Seemamuntakath Kadeesa. Marad Special Court Judge KP Prasannakumari had convicted the accused yesterday.

The incident leading to the case took place on January 3, 2002. Thekkethodi Murukeshan, Cherupurakkal Sugunan and Vinod, Choyichantakath Shekharan and Santhosh are the convicts. This is the sixth case related to the Marad Clashes of 2002 that the court has decided.

The convicts were charged with six crimes such as assembling with arms, destroying things by setting fire, fomenting communal hatred, barging into house and attacking etc. The prosecution accused the convicts of barging into the house of Seemamuntakath Kadeesa and setting fire to the house and house equipments. A loss of Rs 1.5 lakhs has been noted.

Special Prosecutor PD Ravi argued for the prosecution and Adv Sreedharan Pilla argued for the convicts.

This is the sixth case of attack on houses related to the Marad Clashes of 2002. The accused have been sentenced to punishment in four cases and in one they were set free.
